No other book provides such a simple, concise guide to the essential features of bird recognition, enabling precise identification based on comparisons with other species and on distinctive field marks. Jeffery Hugh Richard Boswall was born in Brighton on 20 March 1931. His first full-time job was as assistant to the Director of Watchers and Sanctuaries for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. BBC Natural History Unit . He was joint author of The Peterson Field Guide to the Bird Songs of Britain and Europe and co-founder of the British Library of Wildlife Sounds collection now at the British Library Sound Archive in London.

The body of the guide is organised as follows. Each genus is treated to an Identification section covering diagnosis, separation from other genera, separation of the species, and behaviour. A similar identification section is devoted to each species, this time comprising a general statement, field characters, hand characters, variation, and behaviour. The general statement is helpful for the beginner. Roger Tory Peterson lived in the USA until his death in 1999 and is widely recognised as the inventor of the modern field guide. Naturalist, artist, educator, photographer, he was active in numerous fields. Above all, he is recognised for as one of the most important individuals in the 20th century to kindle in the public a widespread interest and concern for the natural world.
