Daydream is the fifth studio album by American singer and songwriter Mariah Carey, released on October 3, 1995, by Columbia Records. The follow-up to her internationally successful album Music Box and holiday album Merry Christmas, Daydream differed from the two by leaning increasingly towards hip hop and urban music. Throughout the project, Carey collaborated with Walter Afanasieff, with whom she wrote and produced most of her two previous albums. With Daydream, Carey took more control over the musical direction as well as the album's composition. Carey said she considered Daydream the.
Daydream is her best record to date, featuring a consistently strong selection of songs and a remarkably impassioned performance by Carey. A few of the songs are second-rate - particularly the cover of Journey's "Open Arms" - but Daydream demonstrates that Carey continues to perfect her craft and that she has earned her status as an R&B/pop diva.
Mariah Carey pranced through a slow-motion trainwreck in Times Square last New Year’s Eve and there was neither shock nor disappointment. Her instrument has been notoriously temperamental for well over a decade in the best possible conditions, let alone live on stage in the December cold. Her short setlist was ambitious at best and begging for trouble at worst. Her fifth studio album, 1995’s Daydream, played host to some of her purest pop songcraft, but it also pushed the boundaries defining what a Mariah Carey song was supposed to sound like.

Mariah Carey’s fifth album balances big ballads like the heaven-gazing Boyz II Men duet One Sweet Day and the Journey tearjerker Open Arms with fizzy, featherlight pop that takes cues from hip-hop. Fantasy, which pivots on a sample from Tom Tom Club’s Genius of Love, shows off Mariah’s lighter side, her joyful vocal energizing its electro-funk hiccups.
