Deben Bhattacharya (December 12, 1921, Varanasi, India – July 23, 2001, Paris, France) was a Bengali ethnomusicologist, radio and record producer. Bhattacharya produced over 100 records, 23 films and published more than a dozen books mostly under the auspices of UNESCO. Settled in Paris since 1954, his family gave his huge sound archive to Bibliothèque Nationale De France. Producer (among others) of The Living Tradition series. Sites: folkcatalogue.

Deben Bhattacharya’s film, Echoes from Tibet, was shot in 1979 in Ladakh, (often called ‘Little Tibet’), Darjeeling and Dharamsala. Here many Tibetan exiles and the Dalai Lama (who appears in the film) are based. The music on the accompanying CD was recorded in 1975 and 1979 in the refugee communities of Ladakh, Himalchal Pradesh, Sikkim and Darjeeling, and also in Sarnath, close to Varanasi where the Buddha gave his first sermon.

Tibet sole album from 1979 selftitles is areal gem of symphonic prog of the late '70's. One of th better albums of that period, with nice and catchy pieces, excellent keyboards and mellotron arrangements that pleases me completly. Besides the pieces with lyrics who are very well played, two intstrumental tracks grace this album: Eagles and White Ships And Icebergs, absolut superb, I wasn't expect to sound so good and so well performed, really, the musicians play so easy, not pretentious, but quite complex and very inventive.

Instruments: dhol (barrel drum), dahna (large kettle drum), damnia (small kettle drum), jhanjhar (cymbals), bhokkar (long horn), turya (large trumpets) and ranasinga (war horn). Performed by villagers from Pithoragarh, led by Sher Singh Rawat. Tibetan dance-drama (extract I) represents part of children's song and dance in praise of the life of the eighth century king Tri Srong Dcutscn who organised Buddhism in Tibet. Theme: Tibetan monks' first visit to India. Instruments: chanen (spiked fiddle with a hollowed-out wooden neck and resonator), kencha (mandoline type instrument of six strings, and with a resonator covered in snake skin), ngah (drum), singyen (cymbals), thibu (bells) and a flute.

Deben Bhattacharya is not a peformer. For one thing, all the various lute tracks here are unmatched by anything on that disc. Also, I just prefer this style of music. The Bukhara disc is a hybrid style of music created by the intermingling of Jewish and Muslim culture specifically in Bukhara. The music on this disc is of the more pure, widespread Muslim (I am assuming) music of Uzbekistan.
