Whilst Wishbone Ash became more of a guitar-based rock band later in their career, their first three albums are classics of prog rock and this is the best of the three. Most songs feature the excellent twin guitars of Andy Powell and Ted Turner and usually have two or three part vocal harmonies. Time Was" kicks the album off with an acoustic flavour and some nice harmony vocals, before changing to the rockier part of the song. Some nice guitar work here. Sometime World" again starts off slow, before breaking down before a chunky guitar riff appears from the mix and takes.

It’s unusual for a group that’s been around for 50 years and released a huge catalogue of live and studio recordings to be defined – some might even say overshadowed – by one album in particular. But that’s very much the case with Wishbone Ash and Argus. My only real criticism is that it sounds a bit measured and precise. I saw Wishbone Ash play most of this album live last year or the year before and they breathed real life into the songs. It must have been even better in their heyday. Overall, it was great to listen to this again, even if it is a bit dated.

I saw Wishbone Ash play this music live several times in the 1970s. They were a great live band. This was viewed as a great album in the early 1970s and reached in the UK album charts. This was Wishbone’s third album. The band were all living in bedsits in the Ladbroke Grove area of London when it was recorded. The next album Wishbone IV (1973) reached in the UK charts. The band was at the peak of its success after Argus was released. The cover was designed by Hipgnosis who designed the Dark Side of the Moon cover for Pink Floyd.

About Argus 1 contributor. It was named Album of the Year in the 1972 year-end issue of Sounds magazine. The album is medieval-themed, featuring a blend of progressive rock, folk, and hard rock, and is considered a landmark album in the progression of twin-lead guitar harmonisation later adopted by bands such as Thin Lizzy and Iron Maiden. The sound engineer on Argus was Martin Birch, who also worked with Deep Purple, later with Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and other hard rock bands
