My Lai was a massacre. By any objective standard, we killed millions of people-most, simple working people and not soldiers. My Lai was a lesson that was impossible to learn during the throes of war. American kids, scared to death, or high, or high and scared into paranoid passion, killed old folks and babies, raped their mothers, lined them up and mutilated their corpuses. Said they had killed the enemy.
Before I Forget is a 1982 album by Jon Lord, featuring a largely conventional eight-song line-up, no orchestra. The bulk of the songs are either mainstream rock tracks ("Hollywood Rock and Roll", "Chance on a Feeling") or, specifically on Side Two, a series of very English classical piano ballads sung by mother and daughter duo, Vicki Brown and Sam Brown (wife and daughter of entertainer Joe Brown) and vocalist Elmer Gantry.
I sense the percentage is less than half. And of those who have heard about My Lai, many would prefer to forget it. It should be otherwise. The massacre at My Lai is a permanent stain on our national honor, and any conscientious American who truly cares about his/her place amongst the rest of humanity should be familiar with it.
These hamlets were marked on the . Army topographic maps as My Lai and My Khe. The . military codeword for the alleged Viet Cong stronghold in that area was Pinkville, and the carnage was initially referred to as the Pinkville Massacre. Army started its investigation, the media changed it to the Massacre at Songmy. Currently, the event is referred to as the My Lai Massacre in the United States and called the Son My Massacre in Vietnam.
