A Better Place Clipping formed in Los Angeles in 2009. retronomad What a trip. It's seriously some next level shit, from it's production, direction, use of sampling, electronics, lyrics, flow, etc etc etc. It's a complete package and so far my top discovered album of 2019. I'm just mad I didn't discover it sooner.

s latest full-length, Splendor & Misery, might just be their most challenging release yet. It’s a hip-hop space opera of sorts, one that, according to the band, follows the sole survivor of a slave uprising on an interstellar cargo ship, and the onboard computer that falls in love with him. Calling the album high-concept feels like an understatement. This is the rare rap release that draws inspiration in equal parts from prog-rock and P-funk. Certainly, it’s difficult to question the quality of the raw materials used here. As with much of clipping. s work, the ambition is admirable: using a rap album for an Afrofuturist take on 2001: A Space Odyssey. Unfortunately, most of Splendor & Misery’s songs rely on the narrative to propel them forward, not the other way around. Many of these tracks lack an identifiable rhythm section and feel more like spoken-word.

Splendor & Misery is about many things, but all of these are about the shackles of being born black in the West. These memories of oppression and the narrative of survival live on in all my black siblings - I might only be partly black, and I’m not even American, but clipping. made this record so much more than just America. It’s something universal.

Splendor & Misery is sincere and staunchly ambitious. Have solidified their position at the forefront of experimental music. Splendor and Misery doesn’t do much to resuscitate the bygone art that is the space opera concept album, despite the sincerest efforts of all involved. That said, it’s not a bad album, and when it hits its mark, it hits hard.

Well the whole Splendor & Misery concept album is out today for you to feast your eyes upon! You can listen at their Bandcamp or Sub Pop’s album stream on Youtube  .
