Shed - The Traveller For such a well-respected artist, Rene Pawlowitz seems extraordinarily unfussy. While other producers tool around in the studio for hours trying to find the right tones and timbres, Pawlowitz says he just gets an idea in his head, sits down and executes it. His swift approach is not lost on the final product; listening to The Traveller you don't picture him second guessing himself very much, belaboring the placement of a snare or the curve of an envelope . At first pass the album might not sound as rich as Shedding the Past, Pawlowitz's excellent debut album from 2008, but really it's just a bit less flashy. That long player was packed with lush imagery and emotive chords, but The Traveller has more to offer in the way of subtle detail.

What the record really evokes is infrastructure- roads, bridges, tunnels- but without the actual transportation they encourage. There are no nine-minute motorik jams, no mind-altering drift. Shed seems to aim for a loose connectedness. These tracks- 14 in total, though you'll barely notice the spaces between them- have alleys and cubbies. Some of them barely seem finished. The Traveller is a techno record without many of techno's signifiers. You will not lose yourself in repetition; if you try you will probably end up stomped by an unforeseen bass kick. The Traveller is hard, singular music that takes you nowhere.

Shed is not so much standing on the shoulders of giants as tiptoeing around them, brushing against them lightly in the hope of snatching the echoes emanating from their bottomless pockets, and at times he effortlessly succeeds. At others, he needs to brush up on his pick pocketing skills. Whilst The Traveller is a strong and often pleasing effort, in the end it boils down to little more than a grimy yet strangely satisfying dish straight from the pitch black troughs of Berlin.

To put this in context, Shed’s second album is an incredibly gutsy one; Rene Pawlowitz evidently doesn’t give a fuck anymore, though whether he ever did is a question best saved for another article. A man of many guises (Shed, WAX, EQD, STP), up to this point it seemed like each one had its purpose, its function, its place. Even 2008’s Shedding The Past, widely considered one of the defining statements of post-millennial techno, was relatively single-minded for Pawlowitz, a techno concept album – Shed doing his techno thing impeccably over the course of the album. It would be foolhardy to attempt to pigeonhole The Traveller, and even its genre exercises feel out of their own bounds. The album is a smooth, fluid ride; indeed, countless listens later and I still have trouble figuring out which track is which, a good sign for its gluey-but-smooth cohesion.

"Does techno music really need the album format? Let‘s put it differently: can techno work outside the established boundaries of the 12“? A look back into history shows little convincing examples. Dancefloor tracks, made for DJ’s, follow a structure which require a damn perfect dancefloor in your living room in order to adequately absorb that very energy. A good album must offer more than a couple of dancefloor anthems, mixed with some ambient interludes and the obligatory downbeat experiment, has to be more substantial than a paint-box for your euphoric memories of perfect nights long gone." - T.H.
