In 1938, jazz producer John Hammond, Sr. had an idea for a visionary concert. This vision would take fruition as a presentation known as "From Spirituals to Swing," bringing together the connected history of African-American music running from gospel to blues to jazz. High-brow concerts of what was considered distinctly non-high-brow music were still a relatively new concept. Benny Goodman's landmark debut at Carnegie Hall had been only a few months earlier, and Hammond planned on throwing his shindig in the same confines.
From Spirituals to Swing was the title of two concerts presented by John Hammond in Carnegie Hall on 23 December 1938 and 24 December 1939. The concerts included performances by Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Big Joe Turner and Pete Johnson, Helen Humes, Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons, Mitchell's Christian Singers, the Golden Gate Quartet, James P. Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy and Sonny Terry.
From Spirituals To Swing. John Hammond's Carnegie Hall concerts brought a new legitimacy to black music and broke new ground in racial integration. These historic performances were previously excerpted on a 2-CD set in 1987, but now enough unreleased material (23 cuts!) has been discovered to fill another CD, including the only live recordings that Lester Young and Charlie Christian made together!
