The Maytals were formed in the early 1960s and were key figures in popularizing reggae music. Frontman Toots Hibbert's soulful vocal style has been compared to Otis Redding, and led him to be named one of the 100 Greatest Singers by Rolling Stone. Their 1968 single "Do the Reggay", was the first song to first use the word "reggae", naming the genre and introducing it to a global audience. As Island Records founder Chris Blackwell. Toots is one of the purest human beings I've met in my life, pure almost to a fault. On 1 October 1975, Toots and the Maytals were broadcast live on KMET-FM as they performed at The Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles

Toots and the Maytals. Album Funky Kingston. Sister Lee cannot bear it And brother Lincoln hardly stand it now They're crying night and day, louder and louder Nobody to help them make their way I've got four hundred/month rent to pay And I can't find a dollar. Let me tell you time tough (Time Tough) Everything is out of sight, it's so hard (So hard) Time hard (Time hard) Everything is growing higher and higher. Good times was leading the bad times But now the bad times take over When I was a little boy I just keep on feeling it, feeling it, feeling it Feeling it, wow get down.

It was Monkey Man in 1970 that was just billed as The Maytals which got them noticed outside of Jamaica when it became a hit in Britain; it can be found on Reggae Greats – Toots & The Maytals, along with Reggae Got Soul and Pressure Drop. 54-46 That’s My Number, a reggae classic, as well as Hibbert’s prison number, became the first record to get the band noticed outside Jamaica and it, along with all their many hit records, can be found on 54-56 Was My Number – Anthology 1964-2000

After two years with Studio One, the Maytals briefly worked with producer and ska pioneer Prince Buster before signing on with another Jamaican record man of note, Byron Lee, in 1965. With the 1976 album Reggae Got Soul, Island hoped to open up Toots & the Maytals to the R&B audience in America, but while the album was well received, their American following remained little more than a lively cult.
