Charlie Haden - Complete Recordings on Black Saint & Soul Note. This is another collection from the Black Saint/Soul Note label. The sound has been remastered, and is clean and open. There's no booklet-the only information is found on the back of the period album covers, or on the back of the outer box. These are the original albums-there's no "bonus" tracks. The discs slip, bare, into a cardboard reproduction of the original album covers, and everything fits inside a substantial cardboard box. Lacy is well known as a soprano sax player, and has played with many fine jazz artists. Many people will remember his playing with Cecil Taylor.

Each album is different and will appeal to different kinds of listeners. Body & Soul" features the title-track, which all tenor saxophonists in jazz seem destined to record eventually - and while this is a great contribution to that tradition, the earlier version on "Morning Song" is if anything even better - more adventurous and lacking the rather lacklustre lyric  . Murray's first box set in this series was one of Black Saint/Soul Note's better reissues. And this second volume is it's equal, and in some instances possibly better. The seven albums here span the years 1979 to 1993, and show Murray in different playing styles, but always close to the top of his skills.

Listen to "Body And Soul" or "Jitterbug Waltz" (among others) and you'll wish this band had recorded more music together. A lesser album but still containing good music in spots. Body And Soul", (1993) finds Murray once again playing closer to the top of his skills. A quartet of Murray, Sonelius Smith-piano, Wilber Morris-bass, and the fine drummer Rashied Ali. There's a vocalist here also, Taana Running.

As Black Saint and Soul Note continue their boxed set "Complete Recordings Of" series in 2011, this volume by Lester Bowie is one of the most diverse. Containing three discs cut over a decade, it reflects the numerous dimensions in Bowie's musical persona, from fiery improviser to post-modern formalist and engaged ensemble member, and above all, his love for the entire jazz, blues, and gospel music traditions. It's the only title here that showcases Bowie actually leading an ensemble under his own name. His session personnel for the date were saxophonist Arthur Blythe, pianist Amina Claudine Myers (who also sings on the rousing gospel-jazz of "God Has Smiled on Me"), bassist Malachi Favors, and drummer Philip Wilson.
