The performance of Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suites and Sibelius’ Pelleas et Melisande are excellently performed here by Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO). The very familiar opening lines of Peer Gynt Suite (Morning Mood) come through loud and clear as played by the BPO, and numerous familiar themes appear throughout the album. I consider the sound quality of the album to be superb, and the expressive quality of the BPO is also at its best.

Peer Gynt, Op. 23, is the incidental music to Henrik Ibsen's 1867 play of the same name, written by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg in 1875. It premiered along with the play on 24 February 1876 in Christiania (now Oslo). Grieg later created two suites from his Peer Gynt music.
