A smartass indie-rock rebel grabs her guitar and cooks up a perfect debut album of wisecracks, obscenities, tortured love songs and freewheeling sex songs. She's never topped it, but who has? Essential moment: "Fuck and Run," in which the ironic ice queen breaks down and admits to a sentimental streak. Of course, she takes it all back in the next song. Aretha Franklin, ‘I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You’. The greatest rock, pop or soul singer ever steps to the mike and clears her throat. Franklin was shocking in 1967, and still is: Nobody has ever sung with more intensity, more swagger, more soul. Essential moment: "Respect," which never stops kicking your ass.

London Calling’s stature really began to rise after Rolling Stone voted it the greatest album of the 80s in 1989 (the US version of the album was released in January 1980). A cynic might claim that us poor saps have followed Rolling Stone like sheep in our subsequent re-appraisal of the album. It might be fairer to see it as a more balanced reaction to the album after the frostier reception it had on release. 44. The Who: Who's Next. Another classic band whose albums never score as highly in polls like this as you might think, The Who are possibly best loved for their extraordinary run of 60s singles than for their long-players. Which is odd, because a) they have made some classic albums and b) Pete Townshend is a man full of big ideas.
There are many famous album covers, but we’ve put together what we believe are the 100 greatest album covers. We’ve stuck, in the main, with rock and pop, because the jazz arena is so full of wonderful covers that we’re going to do a separate jazz 10. hink of all those lovely Blue Note, Verve, Prestige and Impulse cover. nyway, back to the matter in hand. Some of those you may be a little puzzled by. For instance, 90s French band Fredericks Goldman Jones – what makes this so special? Well, the live album we’ve chosen was in a metal box that had die-cut holes in it; a work of considerable engineering and also a very creative idea

One of the all time greatest rock bands. Several unique & wonderful rock albums they have released are totaly original masterpeice. There are few rock bands as great. Fantastic run of albums, right up until the early 80's. Live at Leeds (the original vinyl LP) arguably the greatest Live album ever.
The Who - Who's Next. In a quandary over how exactly to follow up the sprawling rock opera Tommy, guitarist Pete Townshend attempted to create another concept piece in the form of Lifehouse. However, when audiences - who were meant to be part of the performance - failed to respond, it drove Townshend to the edge of a nervous breakdown and almost caused a band split. Eventually, they enlisted engineer Glyn Johns and instead recorded a straight-ahead rock record. Hit singles came later, but Van Halen's self-titled debut album was a thunderbolt from the blue for rock music. David Lee Roth swaggered and crooned, but it was Eddie Van Halen that was the star of the show, redefining rock guitar playing through his legendary Eruption - a song that was literally entirely a solo and which brought tapping into the mainstream.
