Red Sails in the Sunset is the fifth studio album by Australian group Midnight Oil which was released in October 1984 under the Columbia Records label. It was recorded and produced in Tokyo, Japan and is significant for becoming their first No. 1 album in Australia – it also entered the United States Billboard 200. The cover image, by Japanese artist Tsunehisa Kimura, depicts Sydney Harbour after a hypothetical nuclear strike.

Upon subsequent listens Red Sails in the Sunset becomes addictive. For folks only interested in radio friendly pop hits this album may seem a bit esoteric and often experimental. Indeed Red Sails contains no such blatant hit songs yet there are plenty of obsessively catchy tracks. I’m certain most fans would agree that Red Sails is by far the most ambitious album the band has to offer. Recorded in Japan in 1984 this album remarkably showcases strong songwriting of Jim Moginie, Rob Hirst and Peter Garrett’s along with wonderful playing from Martin Rotsey and Peter Gifford. This is the last album before their breakthrough with Diesel and Dust.
