The album is Marc Bolan's mind wandering as he reads a book of childrens fables by the light of a fire. It is NOT hippie music, drug music, or amusing tales of hobbits and dwarves. And it shows few signs of the rockstar martyrdom of "The Slider". Unicorn" is Marc as a prophet or an ancient childhood wanderer. The songs embody what would become "Rarn" - quiet, elusive, ethereal - an album built on the premise of self-mythologising and believing all of it, no matter how absurd or impossible

Later, like Bowie, he became a master of reinvention - he was first a mod, then a hippyish singer-songwriter, before coming into full bloom as a glittering glam rock superstar. But we find out here that Marc's desire to invent characters for himself started far earlier - when he was a child.

Becoming more adventurous musically, Marc bought a modified vintage Gibson Les Paul guitar (featured on the cover of the album T. Rex), and then wrote and recorded his first hit "Ride a White Swan", which was dominated by a rolling hand-clapping back-beat, Bolan's electric guitar and Finn's percussion. At this time he also shortened the group's name to T. Rex and glam rock.

The book covers Took’s life from cradle to grave and focuses on his time with Marc Bolan in Tyrannosaurus Rex, his ousting from the band after an unsuccessful US tour, together with his later musical ventures with Twink, Larry Wallis, Steve Took’s Horns, Nik Turner’s Inner City Unit and others. And with descriptions of these musical ventures come a number of Ladbroke Grove characters such as Lemmy, Russell Hunter, Trevor Thoms, Boss Goodman and Mick Farren who appear throughout the book, as do many of Took’s former partners.
