The Morning After is a near perfect follow-up to the J. Geils Band's self-titled debut album. It's more of the same winning blend of rocked-out blues, jumped-up soul, and pure rock & roll wildness with enough attitude and energy to get a club full of people from zero to sweaty in less than 60 seconds.
Most people know The J. Geils Band only from hearing the tepid "Centerfold" on classic rock stations. The Morning After" is their second studio release and shows a band in firm control of their sound and direction. It is a delight hearing Peter Wolf's vocals and J. Geil's restrained guitar, which goes right through you on "Cry One More Time. I'm not reliving the past. I am living with timeless blues rock! 2 people found this helpful.

The band spent years establishing roots in the Boston area through live shows before signing with Atlantic Records in 1970. That year it released its debut album, titled simply The J. Geils Band, to modest acclaim. A follow-up in 1971, The Morning After, helped push the group to the national stage as its sound developed.
The J. Geils Band were coming off a commercially dead period when they decided to play up the keyboards on 1978's Sanctuary. When it proved to be somewhat of a success, they crammed even more g keys onto their next album, 1980's Love Stinks. The LP's first single, the Eurodisco-inspired "Come Back," became their highest-charting song in six years. From: '"Live" Full House' (1972). The original version of this harmonica-powered instrumental was on the band's second album, 1971's The Morning.
