Alejandro Escovedo and Richard Barone Photo: Nancy Rankin Escovedo. Richard and I have always had that connection," Escovedo says, talking about his mutual admiration for Barone, his long history with each special guest and teasing the residency's finale with a knowing smile. When I was a kid in high school and that first Velvet Underground album came out, in our little town, Huntington Beach, California, you could go to any party amongst our group of friends and that record was playing, and we'd listen to it from the very beginning to the very end," says Escovedo. Growing up, my friends all wanted to travel to Europe. I wanted to go to New York because the Velvet Underground was from New York. Visconti is best known for his work with the incomparable David Bowie, one of Escovedo's heroes. passed away on my birthday," he says.
Deep into a distinguished career, Alejandro Escovedo, with help from legendary producer Tony Visconti and songwriter Chuck Prophet, has released his finest solo album. Of course one might expect as much when Tony Visconti is in the producer’s chair. Visconti was responsible for albums from a few minor characters called T. Rex, David Bowie, U2, and Morrissey back in the day. He knows a thing or two about how to make electric guitars sound, well, electric. Throw in some cool songs co-written by Escovedo and Chuck Prophet, and guest stints from Ian Hunter and some guy.
Street Songs of Love, Alejandro Escovedo's tenth studio album, is the first time in his career he has written an album entirely comprised of visceral, aggressive rock & roll love songs. Tony Visconti (who produced The Real Animal) is back in the production seat with Bob Clearmountain mixing. Most of the album was co-written with Chuck Prophet, a partnership that began on The Real Animal, but it's grown into something intensely focused. On these songs, the tempos are faster, the sounds harder. David Pulkingham's guitars scream and pummel, Bobby Daniels' bass rumbles and.
Prolific Texas singer/songwriter Alejandro Escovedo released his 14th studio album to critical praise in early June. Tony Visconti produced again, our third with Tony and second one on Concord Records. We really wanted to do something different. This album is centered more around rhythm, and as far as subject matter, I guess you could say that it’s more of an observation of something that’s happening around us instead of something internal. Guild: What are some of the themes behind the songs on the record? AE: There are songs like Sally was a Cop, which is about a young lady that’s really just trying to help people.
Most collaborations between two such strong artistic personalities as Alejandro Escovedo and Chuck Prophet would be doomed from the start, but Real Animal is like adding a turbocharger to a Ferrari V-12. Searing rocker "Always a Friend" burns rubber off the starting line, and Real Animal never looks back
