Formerly a member of the rock group Police, Sting had embarked on a new phase in his career. His debut solo album, The Dream of the Blue Turtles, released in June 1985, included a song entitled Russians, which was also released as a single in November that year. Music Player Sting: Russians. There is no historical precedent To put words in the mouth of the President There’s no such thing as a winnable war It’s a lie we don’t believe anymore.

It's a record of gorgeous, disjointed heartbreak ballads. 448. The Police, ‘Synchronicity’. I do my best work when I'm in pain and turmoil," Sting told Rolling Stone. It was a surprise: But album number five found her in New York and in love. The result was lusher than anything she had recorded but also vibrant and surprisingly catchy. 430. Vampire Weekend, ‘Vampire Weekend’.

It became Madonna’s first number one album on the Billboard 200 and set the record as the first female album in history to sell over five million copies in the United States. With guest backing vocalists, including Helen Terry, Peter Gabriel and Sting the singles Sussudio and One More Night both reached number one on the US chart. 32. It encompassed pretty much everything that followed the punk movement that still served as an alternative to mainstream pop and rock. There was power-pop, neo-psychedelia, acid-punk, art rock and lots and lots of keyboards. The band’s proggier elements were replaced by more streamlined pop songs that were heavily influenced by early-Beatles and the burgeoning New Wave scene, most notably in songs like Shark Attack and the psychedelic synth instrumental Double Happy. It’s not their best album, but it’s the best at convincing serious young rock nerds that Devo were more than a silly footnote.

Even if it’s a standard pop song, it should reflect my entire musical DNA, and I think this song does. I think this album does, actually. People have said this is my return to rock & roll, and I understand the lack of keyboards and the heavier, edgier guitar sounds are a factor in that-but my initial response was, I never left rock & roll. I’ve been playing every night of my working life, and how do you define rock & roll, anyway? This album reflects what has intrigued me since I was a kid, what I’ve studied, who I’ve played with, what I’ve attempted
