Lo-fi singer/songwriter Willis Earl Beal has announced a new album, titled Noctunes. It follows last year’s Experiments in Time, and it’s out on Aug. 28, via Tender Loving Empire. The new record, described as ambient-leaning in a press release, was recorded after Beal moved to Olympia, Washington and spent some time in the woods (there may or may not also be a Twin Peaks reference in that same press release, though not one to Phil Elverum, curiously enough). I wanted to create this persona that could say everything perfectly with very little, Beal says in a statement

Willis Earl Beal has been through the wringer since 2013's Nobody Knows. He's been married, he relocated from New York to rural Washington, divorced, moved to Portland, became homeless, and had some unruly encounters with police. Even so, he managed to record and self-release 2014's Experiments in Time, which delivered a glimpse of the music found on Noctunes, his debut for Tender Loving Empire. The booming voice of the blues, rock, and gospel shouter of earlier records has been replaced by a vulnerable, tender soul singer.

By now, you probably know of Willis Earl Beal as a wanderer. He’s lived life after life, never staying in one place for long. He calls himself Nobody and his Tumblr The Book of Nobody, and he sporadically posts poems that double as status updates on his music career. In the past four years, he signed to XL Recordings and then left the label; he got married and then divorced. Though they’re separated by three decades, Noctunes finds a kinship with L’Amour, the lost Lewis album unearthed last year by Light in the Attic Records. Both collections have an immediate air of lostness to them; both sustain their melancholy for what feels like ages. But while Lewis sang with a faraway wistfulness, Beal kindles a fierce spark of hope at Noctunes’ core.

Willis Earl Beale's Noctunes is a bedroom recording in the truest sense: as it plays, you can almost see Beal sitting in a dark room, calmly peeling off each note. That makes Noctunes a pretty heavy listen from a guy coming off a raw divorce and a very public falling out with his record label. He's got a lot to sing about. That they induce sleep if played at low volume is perhaps on purpose. The music just sort of hangs around without any progression, making the album seem longer than its already not short 63-minute runtime. This is a bedroom recording in the truest sense: as it plays, you can almost see Beal sitting in a dark room, calmly peeling off each note. That makes Noctunes a pretty heavy listen, except these songs aren’t as structured as previous efforts.
