Sail Away is an album by Randy Newman, released in May 1972. It was produced by Lenny Waronker and Russ Titelman and issued on Reprise Records. While all of its songs were written and composed by Newman, several had already been recorded by other artists. In 2003, it was ranked number 321 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
On his third studio album, Randy Newman found a middle ground between the heavily orchestrated pop of his debut and the more stripped-down, rock-oriented approach of 12 Songs, and managed to bring new strength to both sides of his musical personality in the process . Overall, Sail Away is one of Newman's finest works, musically adventurous and displaying a lyrical subtlety that would begin to fade in his subsequent works.
With the appearance of the album Sail Away (1972) Randy Newman finally established his name as one of the best and most original songwriters of his generation. With its distinctive ironic style, he takes the slavery (Sail Away), stardom (Lonely At The Top) and religion (God's Song) on the grain. Now with some demos and extra songs. Sail away, sail away We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay Sail away, sail away We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay. In America every man is free To take care of his home and his family You'll be as happy as a monkey in a monkey tree You're all gonna be an American. Sail away, sail away We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay Sail away, sail away We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay. More on Genius. Sail Away by Randy Newman appears on his album, Sail Away (1972). Newman presents the pitch of an American slave trader to Africans in Bonny, off the west coast of Nigeria. The slaver sings a song about the wonderful life to be had in Charlston. Selling a lie about what life will be was used, but the more common practice was going inland to kidnap and shackle those you found. What have the artists said about the song?
Sail Away is an album by Randy Newman, released in May 1972. Newman himself had also previously recorded "Last Night I Had a Dream" as a single, issued in September 1968. The version heard on Sail Away is a re-recording with a notably different arrangement. You Can Leave Your Hat On" was later recorded by Joe Cocker in 1986 and this version was featured on the soundtrack of the 1986 film 9½ Weeks starring Kim Basinger. He Gives Us All His Love" was also initially written and recorded by Newman in a sparser and slower arrangement for the 1971 film Cold Turkey.
