Bernstein conducts brilliantly. The New York Philharmonic plays magnificently. The vocal soloists sing beautifully. And the chorus is very good. 2 people found this helpful.
Rudolf Serkin recorded it four times: in 1941 with Bruno Walter and the New York Philharmonic; in 1953 with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra; in 1962 with Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic, and in 1981 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Seiji Ozawa. Bernstein recorded a live performance of the concerto in September 1989, shortly before his death, with Krystian Zimerman and the Vienna Philharmonic. Vladimir Ashkenazy recorded all the Beethoven piano concertos three times: in 1971-1972 with Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, in 1983 with Zubin Mehta and the Vienna Philharmonic, and in 1986-1987 with himself conducting the Cleveland Orchestra.

The charismatic rapport between Bernstein and his New York colleagues crackles with live-wire intensity. EAC extraction logfile from 24. January 2008, 11:59. New York Philharmonic. Leonard Bernstein, Beethoven. Symphony No. 3 "Eroica".
The first is that the New York Philharmonic, though certainly more than competent, did not have a trademark strength like its chief competitors in Philadelphia, Cleveland, Chicago, and Boston. You hope for brilliance that is not there. In the Symphony No. 7 Bernstein is deliberate and persistent in the first movement's slow introduction and never really turns up the voltage until the finale, which thus acquires its proper bacchanalian mood. As with other albums in this Sony reissue series, the CD version includes both photographic reproductions of the original artwork and booklet reprints of the jacket text, with added French and German translations.
