The Beach Boys' Christmas Album is the seventh studio album by the Beach Boys, released in November 1964. it contains five original songs and seven standards on a Christmas theme. The album proved to be a long-running success during subsequent Christmas seasons, initially reaching number six in the US Billboard 200 chart in its year of release and eventually going gold. Music historian James Perone wrote that it is "regarded as one of the finest holiday albums of the rock era".
The Beach Boys are an American rock band formed in Hawthorne, California in 1961. Their discography from 1961 to 1984 was originally released on the vinyl format, with the 1985 album The Beach Boys being the group's first CD release. The Beach Boys' catalogue has been released on reel-to-reel, 8-track, cassette, CD, MiniDisc, digital downloads, and various streaming services.
Most of the featured songs are well-known, some of the more popular being "Frosty the Snowman," "White Christmas," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," and "I'll Be Home for Christmas," among others. Furthermore, there are four songs composed by the Beach Boys - "Little Saint Nick," "Man With All the Toys," "Santa's Beard," and "Merry Christmas, Baby" - which begin the album.
Opening with five Beach Boys originals (including "Christmas Day," with Al Jardine's first lead vocal), The Beach Boys' Christmas Album starts like any other Beach Boys album, with tight-knit harmonies and a pop-rock band providing the instrumental backing. The remaining seven standards, however, include The Four Freshmen's arranger, Dick Reynolds, handling the orchestral backing for tunes such as "Frosty the Snowman," "We Three Kings of Orient Are," and "White Christmas. The mix between the joyful and the solemn makes for a well-rounded.
