Hugo Philipp Jacob Wolf (13 March 1860 – 22 February 1903) was an Austrian composer of Slovene origin, particularly noted for his art songs, or Lieder. He brought to this form a concentrated expressive intensity which was unique in late Romantic music, somewhat related to that of the Second Viennese School in concision but diverging greatly in technique.

The disc, recorded live at the 2010 Festival to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the composer s birth, completes Wolf s famous Mörike songbook, and includes some of his best known Lieder. Over the course of the next couple of years, Oxford Lieder is promoting a series of concerts encompassing every song, all of which will be recorded and released on the Stone Records label, in a series of around a dozen.

This album contains 18 of the 53 Mörike Lieder by Hugo Wolf, performed by legendary artists Dietrich Fischer Dieskau and Sviatoslav Richter. The Gedichte von Eduard Mörike is one of the five major song cycles that brought great recognition to the nineteenth-century composer, Hugo Wolf. The 18 songs included in this recording rank amongst the composer’s most outstanding works. Despite Wolf’s own regret of being recognised as a great lied composer, he developed the Lieder genre to its highest level.

My first experience of Hugo Wolf was as a child, hearing Verschwiegene Liebe (Silent Love) on Barbra Streisand's Classical Barbra album (much praised by both Leonard Bernstein and Glenn Gould). I remembered the song years later, and it drew me back to Wolf. Their album of Wolf Lieder is out now on EMI Classics.
