A new compilation called J-Jazz: Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1969-1984 portrays that extended decade in a country where, in the wake of post-World War II American occupation, the jazz community grew enormously. In particular, J-Jazz highlights independent releases never before issued outside Japan, mostly by artists who haven’t seen much international attention. There’s nothing that is consciously folk-fusion about their work-no koto or shakuhachi, for instance. It is a bit of a misnomer to call it Deep Modern Jazz, since plenty of pedal-point structures, ostinato vamps, electric piano, and booming bass amplification date these recordings. Yet it’s so consistently satisfying as to convince anyone that the well is indeed deeper than we might have imagined. Patrick Jarenwattananon.

The New Sounds is the debut studio album by Miles Davis, released as a 1951 10-inch LP. It is his first album as leader and his first album for Prestige Records. Davis contributed three tracks to the various artists LP Modern Jazz Trumpets and performed as a sideman for Lee Konitz's on The New Sounds. Prestige would be Davis' label for the next five years, with occasional recordings for Blue Note and Debut, until he signed with Columbia in 1955.

Young Japanese musicians were as entranced by US jazz during the 1980s as were festival audiences, andJ Jazz: Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1969-1984 perfectly captures their febrile embrace of the music. Compiled by British collectors Tony Higgins and Mike Peden, the album spans cosmic jazz, abstraction and on-fire dancefloor fusion by artists whose names are generally only known to niche listeners. A running thread through the tracks is the ramped-up drive of the drummers and the bassists (which compensates for the longueurs of soloists whose enthusiasm occasionally runs away with them).

Modern Jazz: A Collection of Seattle's Finest Jazz. With a number of artists represented, the mainstay of the album is a focus with something of a modern bent. There are aspects of post-bop to be heard, and slight references to the third stream set, but far and away, the bulk of the material is based in contemporary instrumental jazz. The piano plays heavily in all or most of the works, using local Seattle (and beyond) notables such as Marc Seales, Clay Giberson, and Whitney Ashe.

Double album with unreleased live recordings from the German Jazz Festival 1966 featuring all the big German names of the time - Albert Mangelsdorff, Horst Jankowski, Hans Koller, Rolf Kühn, Klaus Doldinger etc! Listen to Mangelsdorff's "Plakate" or Kühn/Doldinger's "Gemini Waltz".
