★★★★ While English composer Malcolm Arnold’s symphonies have been recorded successfully in the past, this new release presents a uniquely fascinating programme. These works were composed in Ireland (1973-76) when Arnold’s life was in turmoil: his marriage collapsed, his alcoholism worsened, and he attempted suicide. It’s all documented here. Symphony No 7 (1973) is in three movements, each designated as a portrait of one of Arnold’s children

Bax Symphony number nought at last! The piano score of Arnold Bax's Symphony in F of 1907 was completed by its composer but never orchestrated, and has long been one of the great "might-have-beens" of the British symphonic repertoire, along with Elgar's Third Symphony and E. J. Moeran's Second. Unlike Elgar and Moeran, Bax actually completed his symphony, and now Martin Yates has set it into full score, managing to catch the elusive, idiomatic sound of Bax's orchestra in a convincing way we never expected to hear. Nympholept Arnold Bax; Royal Scottish National Orchestra; David Lloyd-Jones. I. Allegro moderato Arnold Bax; Royal Scottish National Orchestra; David Lloyd-Jones. II. Lento moderato Arnold Bax; Royal Scottish National Orchestra; David Lloyd-Jones. David Lloyd-Jones’s ongoing Bax symphonies cycle continue with a triumphant recording of the Fourth Symphon. - Fanfare. Bax was an unabashed Romantic, his music well out of step with the prevailing musical climate at the time of his death in 1953. His compositions, not often recorded, can now be appreciated and enjoyed for the unique voice they reveal. kHz, 24-bit PCM – 2xHD Studio Masters.
