While I enjoy the subtler approaches of conductors like Karajan and singers like Bergonzi, in their celebrated version, the whole point of verismo is to demonstrate the maxim that nothing succeeds like excess, and certainly both the conductors and our lead tenor here deliver in spades. Corelli, especially in the I Pagliacci, simply exudes animal magnetism and his voice is so virile and fresh.
