It’s confusing – if in this case welcome – when an album changes its colours completely halfway through. For the first few songs, this Brit duo’s debut has little to recommend it, floating through the insipid tropes of TV-ad-orientated pop, bringing to mind Ellie Goulding wowing members of the Royal Family with her saccharine coos. But then somebody involved realises they’re going to expire from blandness, and they start musically pushing the boat out – tentatively, but with good intentions. So the second half sees an influx of nervy electronica and the kind of motifs Mike Oldfield might have.

Beautifully fusing acoustic fragility and pulsing electronica, The Blackheart Orchestra collide stringed instruments with 80’s synthesisers and indie, pop and experimentalism with classical influences. Often mistaken for an 8-piece band on first listen, the duo’s stage scene has been described as a ‘musical spaceship’ where they are continuously changing from electric and acoustic guitars, bowed guitar, piano, organ, bass and electronic percussion to vintage synthesisers, omnichord and melodica in a complex choreographed weave of musical moods and textures

The Stone Roses is the debut studio album by English rock band the Stone Roses. It was recorded mostly at Battery Studios in London with producer John Leckie from June 1988 to February 1989 and released in May of that year by Silvertone Records.
