3 Feet High and Rising is the debut studio album by American hip hop group De La Soul, released on March 3, 1989 by Tommy Boy Records. It marked the first of three full-length collaborations with producer Prince Paul, which would become the critical and commercial peak of both parties. The album title comes from the Johnny Cash song "Five Feet High and Rising". The album contains the singles "Me Myself and I", "The Magic Number", "Buddy", and "Eye Know".

Months after the album went gold, lawyers for 1960s classic rock group The Turtles filed a lawsuit against De La for using the first four bars of their 1968 song You Showed Me on the song "Transmitting Live From Mars. Though Da La managed to settle with the band, going forward, their discography was thrown into digital limbo due to worries about simliar legal action over samples.

Pressing not really good regarding levels. I need to pump up the volume. Amplitude is not good as well. Really desappointed

Cut in-house at GZ, this new pressing is sourced from a new digital master by Rick Essig. To my ears this betters the digital copies given away by DLS a few years back and the OG CD rips I had. The sound is tight with a decent dose of bass. The jacket is a nice full print with UV spot gloss details, overall a very good package.Sadly, the pressing is not silent and is definitely a partially botched job on GZ's behalf. My first copy had multiple pimples and large non-fill dimples. These can easily take out a stylus if played over, so this is a concern. The replacement from VMP is much better but not fully free of non-fill. I'd be careful buying this for the scalped prices on here and make sure you are getting a perfect copy.

Yeah it does sound really great. Looks pretty too. Probably the best sounding record I've gotten from VMP.

I have never owned or heard the original pressing but the VMP pressing beats mp3 files I have had on my iPod for years. The bass is tight, thumpy and of course there is surface noise..some of the samples in the songs were sampled with surface noise in them. My labels and jacket are perfect, no errors or damage from what I can see. Vinyl me please knocked this out of the park.

Having studiously compared this new reissue with my original US pressing (Matrix / Runout (Side A): TBLP-1019-A-REI-DMM SPAR SP1-2 B-34374-REI-DMM Δ23994 O-Matrix / Runout (Side B): Δ23994 -X B-34375-REI-DMM TBLP-1019-B-REI-DMM SPAR SP1-2) both myself and my lovely girlfriend concurred that the original pressing sounds better. This new version, although a touch louder, lacks a significant amount of the low end warmth and depth that came with the OG. Statistically speaking, I measured the bass response on the OG in the region of 240 Hz. I was dismayed to discover that the bass on the new pressing fell some way behind, clocking in at around 210 Hz, which would certainly explain the somewhat flat and dulcet tones across some of the tracks. However, my disappointment soon turned to sheer delight when I discovered that my lovely girlfriend had secretly made one of her famous shepherd's pies for tea, to cheer me up! :-)

Not sure what your bass measurements mean. 210 and 240 Hz are just frequencies, both of which are present in both pressings. Neither is a measure of "bass response" unless I'm missing something

Just got a copy.....wow, fantastic pressing!I own an original and the Rhino 2lp reissue and all i can say is that this is the best pressing ive heard!I have 3 or 4 of their singles and this pressing sounds similar to the quality on the 12" single records.Dont sleep...you wont be dissapointed.

I personally don't like this pressing sounds. Its quiet and clear but sounds flat, a bit digital and lacks bass. I have an original BCM UK pressing and I think it sounds much better.

Are you referring to the single LP version? I honestly can't imagine 30+ minutes crammed on any LP side would sound better than 2LP.. Especially bass heavy music like this.. But, I don't own an Original.. So what do I know!

I think so too. The remastered releases sounds never like the originals. It´s a digitally remastered release here which sounds a little bit fade away of the original. The freaky splatter doesn´t makes it better. I can wait for a black release for a normal price. But it´s all a matter of taste - each to their own.

As others have said, great pressing...and quiet. I am usually suspicious of clear vinyl, but this one looks cool and also sounds fantastic.

In my experience, and also noticed by many others, clear vinyl is usually noisier than black vinyl. I have several other albums that were pressed or repressed onto clear vinyl and they are terrible.

why would you be suspicious of clear vinyl? In my experience clear vinyl sounds better than black. now the splatter on the other hand....

I am going to second this album sounds great. Completely quiet, no pops or cracks on any side, good low end and nice, even mids and highs. Looks sick too.

Just did an A/B against nm original pressing. This new pressing is mastered much louder, but otherwise I can’t hear much difference. Sounds great. Dead silent background. No complaints.

People on VMP's forums are saying it sounds amazing. VMP usually has great quality control with their pressings. Shipping is worrisome, but generally fine too.

The band are going through legal issues with tommyboy label the label gets 90%of sales it has not been released to download and its an iconic album from its time.the dispute is going on now they were going to release there back catalouge to download but not sure now this album is therefore very collectable hope this helps

There are rumors that VMP is doing a pressing of this for their Essentials ROTM (basically all of the clues they've given out point to this + one of the members confirmed that there was a 30th anniversary pressing in the works in a reply to someone on Instagram.)Their ROTMs will be formally announced on the 26th, so here's hoping we get this.

The clue they posted on Twitter just now is def hinting on this. They're using the same type of letters as the abum's for their last hint. In less than 24 hrs we'll know for sure!

Very muddy sound. No real top end present. Don't have an original to compare to however. Sure there must be better sounding versions of the seminal album though.
