Vasso Devetzi, greek pianist, Thessaloniki, September the 9th, 1927- Paris, November the 1st, 1987. An ambitious artist who defined herself in her cv through her friendships. So, friend of the composer Mikis Theodorakis and late friend of Maria Callas. In the 50´s she moved to Paris. She became friend with Marguerite Long, Henri Sauguet, René Dumesnil, Bernard Gavoty, Claude Rostand, Jacques Fevrier, Jean Roire. An excellent result in my opinion. Serge Baudo conducts Devetzi and the Orchestre de la Socièté des Concerts du Conservatoire de Paris, long and dull name for the ancestor of the Orchestre de Paris. Chant du Monde, France.

These live recordings by Serge Baudo and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra date from 1989, and were previously issued as separate albums in 1991, though releasing them together in this twofer seems to reflect the artists' actual intentions. Even though the performances are better than adequate for most purposes, with sympathetic interpretations, competent playing, and fine sound quality, there are enough distracting audience noises to make this set a second choice.

Pelléas et Mélisande. Suite from music for the drama of the same name by Maurice Maeterlinck, Op. 46. Mélisande (Mélisande). The common thread tying this album together is the 1892 poetic drama Pelléas et Mélisande by the Belgian Symbolist poet Maurice Maeterlinck (1862-1949). This tragic drama of love attracted an unusual number of the poet's contemporaries, (Jean Sibelius, Claude Debussy, Gabriel Fauré, Arnold Schönberg) and inspired them to write a variety of different works ranging from symphonic poems to opera. Serge Baudo created these unforgettable recordings with the Czech Philharmonic in the late 80's and early 90's.

Pelléas et Mélisande, Op. 80 is a suite derived from incidental music by Gabriel Fauré for Maurice Maeterlinck's play of the same name. He was the first of four leading composers to write music inspired by Maeterlinck's drama. Debussy, Schoenberg and Sibelius followed in the first decade of the 20th century. Fauré's music was written for the London production of Maeterlinck's play in 1898.
