Jo Quail probably scratches her head on a daily basis and wonders how on earth her music career has turned out in such a fashion. Yet, here the cellist is opening concerts up and down the country with little more than her talents, her instrument of choice and a loop pedal to entertain an audience more used to riffs and blastbeats. This time around though, she’ll be armed with Exsolve, her brand new studio album out on Friday. Naturally, this is an album with little in the way of vocals, but you can tell a story through more than just words with as much, if not more, detail and meaning. In the case of Exsolve, the trio of songs present are a soundscape into a dark and twisted world that Jo Quail has managed to craft quite expertly. The album begins with Forge of Two Forms, the longest track on the album at just under eighteen minutes.

Jo Quail has announced a new album! The new album, titled Exsolve, features three new pieces from the cellist and is scheduled to be released in November this year. The upcoming record was recorded with Chris Fielding at Skyhammer Studios (ELECTRIC WIZARD, PRIMORDIAL, WITCHSORROW, CONAN) and the initial ideas for the record were formed following an invitation to perform at the Arp Museum in Bonn, to celebrate the Barbara Hepworth Sculpture for a Modern World exhibition (previously at the Tate Modern)

Composer and cellist Jo Quail write and performs instrumental music. Her sound is courageous, demanding the intense emotional investment of the listener. Her music reaches beyond conscious boarders and invites you to explore a constantly shifting landscape. This brings me to Jo Quail, experimental cellist, loop pedal wizard, and versatile session musician. Her own back catalog is largely a post-rock/modern classical blend, and after a year in which she’s supported acts like Myrkur, Amenra, Boris, and Winterfylleth, their influence clearly shows on her new record. With her sound evolving towards post-metal and atmospheric black metal, her new album is an interesting development. Exsolve is three tracks, each over ten minutes long, each with a different feel. All open with Quail’s signature cello/loop pedal acrobatics, layering texture, rhythm, and repeated melody phrases together, assembling the song under you in a way that reminds me of an atmoblack Mike Oldfield. From the beginning, each track feels different, though, sounding anywhere between post-rock and a classical string quartet playing a horror movie soundtrack.
