By 1979's Reggatta de Blanc (translation: White Reggae), nonstop touring had sharpened the Police's original blend of reggae-rock to perfection, resulting in breakthrough success. Containing a pair of massive hit singles - the inspirational anthem "Message in a Bottle" and the spacious "Walking on the Moon" - the album also signaled a change in the band's sound. Whereas their debut got its point across with raw, energetic performances, Reggatta de Blanc was much more polished production-wise and fully developed from a songwriting standpoint.
'Reggatta de Blanc' was actually a stage jam from the middle of 'Can't Stand Losing You' that eventually solidified into a new piece. Stewart Copeland: Revolver, 4/00. The second album from The Police, Reggatta de Blanc loosely translates to white reggae, even though there is no French word for reggae. Released in 1979, the album is filled with a set of songs that were mostly written in the studio. The previous album, Outlandos d'Amour, exhausted the songs that were written before the formation of The Police, so they now were forced to write songs as a group. Reggatta de Blanc" is a 1979 musical composition by The Police, and the title track on their second album. The instrumental evolved from improvisational stage jams during early Police performances of the song "Can't Stand Losing You". The first three Police albums, Outlandos d'Amour, Reggatta de Blanc, and Zenyatta Mondatta, were named by their manager, Miles Copeland (Police drummer Stewart Copeland's brother), using words he made up. "Reggatta de Blanc" is the only one that is also the name of a song. The fourth and fifth Police albums got away from this naming convention and were titled by Sting: Ghost in the Machine and Synchronicity.
