Robert Burns had an intimate, but not sexual, relationship with Mrs Agnes Maclehose in the late 1780s. They had a regular correspondence during the affair and used the pseudonyms ‘Clarinda’ and ‘Sylvander’. Burns wrote this poem after their final meeting and sent it to Mclehose just before she departed for Jamaica to be with her estranged husband. Warring sighs and groans I’ll wage thee! Who shall say that Fortune grieves him. While the star of hope she leaves him? Me, nae cheerfu’ twinkle lights me, Dark despair around benights me.

Here Burns grew up in poverty and hardship, and the severe manual labour of the farm left its traces in a premature stoop and a weakened constitution. His stay in the city also resulted in some lifelong friendships, among which were those with Lord Glencairn, and Frances Anna Dunlop (1730–1815), who became his occasional sponsor and with whom he corresponded for many years until a rift developed. My way is: I consider the poetic sentiment, correspondent to my idea of the musical expression, then chuse my theme, begin one stanza, when that is composed-which is generally the most difficult part of the business-I walk out, sit down now and then, look out for objects in nature around me that are in unison or harmony with the cogitations of.

During his stay in the city, Burns made many close friends. These friends included the influential Lord Glencairn, and Frances Anna Dunlop. For a brief time period, Burns was involved with Agnes 'Nancy' McLehose, with whom he exchanged passionate letters. Burns had his first child, Elizabeth Paton Burns with his mother’s servant Elizabeth Paton, while he was in relationship with Jean Armour, who became pregnant with his twins in March 1786. Burns was ready to marry Jean but her father was against the marriage. They, eventually, got married in 1788. The couple had nine children, out of which only three survived infancy. Meanwhile, he also fell in love with Mary Campbell, whom he had met in the church while living Tarbolton. She later sailed home to her parents in Campbeltown.

Robert Burns was born on 25 January 1759 in the village of Alloway, near Ayr. His father was William Burnes, a gardener turned tenant farmer from the north-east of Scotland, and his mother was Agnes Brown, an Ayrshire woman of farming stock. Burns’s early life was marked by constant back-breaking work on a succession of small farms, but his father saw to it that he never lacked another kind of culture. Burns began to think of gathering his poems together for publication and approached a printer in nearby Kilmarnock. He had fallen in love with and made pregnant a local girl, Jean Armour, and her father was not best pleased.
