Long Arm took up music when he was a kid. In music school he studied how to play piano. He was really impressed by a DJ’s perfomance on one of the music channels when he saw it for the first time. It was difficult to get a turntable back then, so Long Arm and his friend started making them from old soviet phonographs/record players and collecting vintage vinyl records. This album is numbing. Listening to it from beginning to end is a true journey through the mind of an incredibly talented producer. Long Arm fits each and every sample perfectly into the composition as a whole. I’m not even comfortable using the word “song” to describe any of the work on this album, that’s how amazing The Branches is.Step back, breathe, relax, get a hold of yourself man!Ok.Sorry about that. I’m better now.And now I’m smiling my ass off – that’s the problem with writing a post while listening to an album of this caliber. I settle into a song, I write a couple of lines. Then the next song hits me, and I fall head over heels in love all over again. My brain is too busy being courted by the silky bass, the hissing drums, the warm cymbals, the muted trumpet, the playful vocals. The piano wavers, hi hats sparkling above like gems, then crashes, uncovering yet another sample, taking you further into the composition, inviting you deeper. I would say it’s like sex for your brain, but there’s more to it than that. It’s more than just the pure joy of sex, it’s the thrill of a chance encounter, the titillation of uncertainty, the release, the grasp.This album put a god damn smile on my face. How often does that happen? You walk into your room, sit down, put on your headphones, and the pure beauty of the music puts a god damn smile on your face.
