Bob James is an American 'smooth' jazz pianist. He's been playing since the 60's and has a diverse style, he is not a hard core jazz man, hence the 'smooth' title, because he does not fit easily into main stream 'slots' his work has been somewhat overlooked. He has been associated and played for many well know artiste such as Sinatra, Quincey Jones, George Benson, Aretha Franklin and Paul Simon (just to illustrate he's not a one dimensional player).
One is the second solo album by jazz keyboardist Bob James. It was an important album in the early smooth jazz genre and is famous for its end track, "Nautilus", which became important to hip hop as one of the most sampled tracks in American music. Released on April 17, 1974 this album charted at number two on the Jazz Album Charts. Valley of the Shadows" (James) – 9:42. In the Garden" (Johann Pachelbel) – 3:06. The best jazz guitar albums are up there with any other jazz classics you can think of. These 75 feature essential work by groundbreaking musicians. Killer cut: ‘What Is This Thing Called Love’. 65: Earl Klugh & Bob James: Two Of A Kind (1982). The follow-up to their earlier and incredibly successful 1979 collaboration, One On One, Detroit finger-picker Klugh and keyboard genie Bob James reunited on this 1982 album to serve up a similarly tasteful platter of proto-smooth jazz. Mainly a collection of standards, the album highlights Kessel’s combination of a mellow tone with fleet-fingered fretboard virtuosity, harmonic sophistication and an intuitive sense of swing. Killer cut: ‘On Green Dolphin Street’. 32: Kenny Burrell: Asphalt Canyon Suite (1969).

For their first joint album release, One on One, Earl Klugh and Bob James received a Grammy award for Best.
100 Essential Jazz Albums. Photograph by William Gottlieb, Redferns, Getty. While finishing Bird-Watcher, a Profile of the jazz broadcaster and expert Phil Schaap, I thought it might be useful to compile a list of a hundred essential jazz albums, more as a guide for the uninitiated than as a source of quarrelling for the collector. First, I asked Schaap to assemble the list, but, after a couple of false starts, he balked.
