You know, everyone always talks about Sammy Davis Jr.'s 1966 album with Laurindo Almeida which is...well absolutely more than deserving of its endless praise, but few ever speak about this gem from 1958, "Mood to Be Wooed" with guitarist Mundell Lowe. This was Sammy's first venture into the world of an "unplugged" album and is almost as terrific and just as moving as his later effort. This first outing features Sammy with a simple, soft, electric guitar, performing numbers like "Bewitched", "Try A Little Tenderness", "I've Got a Crush On You", and more jazz/pop standards. This was before a lot of the effects of Sammy's smoking/alcohol use took a bit from the complete ease/richness of his vocals as is evidenced by an impressively deeper-than-usual baritone timbre displayed on all of the tracks. Most of these songs are love songs, some sad, some happy, and he sings each song with all the feeling and emotion the original writers seemingly intended, and his acting in each track is top notch, which is absolutely essential for an album such a this.Props should also be given to Mundell Lowe for his beautifully soft electric guitar playing, never attempting to take Sammy's spotlight away but accompanying him in the most perfect of playing possible. He is given occasional solos which he plays with much tenderness/softness which matches Sammy's emotional vocal lines perfectly.Overall, this album, having become a forgotten gem, is one of the many examples of why Sammy should be, could be, and needs to be held in the same regards as singers like Sinatra, proving he was as good, if not better, at conveying all the emotions and meaning the song writer originally intended. I count this album in my top 5, if not my top 3 :)If you're a vinyl enthusiast and own an actual player, you can pick this one up as an LP for dirt cheap under a reissue named "Try A Little Tenderness", reissued during the 60s by the album's original label Decca Records! Enjoy if you find it :) highlights: Bewitched, I Could Have Told You So, I Get Along Without You Very Well, Try A Little Tenderness, I've Got A Crush On You, Love Me
