When this album came out in 1995, it received quite some recognition - also beyond the borders of the electronic music scene. I remember giving it to my music teacher who at the time desperately tried to grasp what youth's fascination with Techno was all about, but somehow had gotten stuck between Sven Väth's "Accident In Paradise" and some dutch "Thunderdome" samplers. When he gave "Metropolis ..." back to me, he was like: "You know, this is really something else ... but I don't think it is what the majority of ravers listens to at their parades ...".Listening to "Metropolis Present Day" as I'm writing this in 2012, I have to say this has aged extremely well. The standout tracks are still the two Felix produced with Mark Bell (LFO) as his engineer - "Marine Mood" and "B4 Wuz Then", which are also very accessible tracks for people usually not into electronic music - I usally start with those whenever someone needs basic education about "real" Techno that won't scare them off.Another big slice of the album is what could be called "refined Aphrohead tracks": While "Cycle Spin", "Footsteps Of Rage", "Anotha Level" and "Thee Dawn" delve into pretty manic filter trance at times, they never go as far as the demented 15 minute bangers we so love Felix' Aphrohead alias for. But that's not necessarily a bad thing - Felix clearly had the home listener in mind when he did the album, and "Submarine" is another nice tune skillfully walking the line between beautiful melody and supressed dancefloor mayhem. Straight melancholia is delivered on "Somekinda Special", a chilled piece of spoken word over a straight, atmospheric beat and "Little Bloo", a heartbreakingly beautiful, balearic ambient tune - guitar included.Classic stuff. Now come back here, Felix - there, that's a good housecat!

It's not the Mark Bell from LFO, but the other one (aka Blakkat).
