Johann Sebastian Bach published his Clavier-Übung III (sometimes referred to as German Organ Mass) in 1739. It consists of a collection of works which he started to conceive around the year 1735, and to this day it stands as Bach's most significant and technically demanding set of works for organ.

The Great Eighteen Chorale Preludes, BWV 651–668, are a set of chorale preludes for organ prepared by Johann Sebastian Bach in Leipzig in his final decade (1740–1750), from earlier works composed in Weimar, where he was court organist. The works form an encyclopedic collection of large-scale chorale preludes, in a variety of styles harking back to the previous century, that Bach gradually perfected during his career.

Clavier-Übung III, Jesus Christus unser Heiland, BWV688. Preludes and Fugues, Prelude and Fugue in E flat, BWV552 (from Clavier-I). Aus tiefer Noth schrei ich zu dir. Jesus Christus, unser Heiland. However arcane in appearance, this programme principally comprises the major chorale preludes which form the basis of the third part of the Clavier-Ubung of 1739. Each one is prefaced, not, as the note states, with chorale harmonizations by Bach, but by the original tunes sans finery, followed by vocal settings by composers of a century earlier, notably Praetorius and the three ‘Ss’, Scheidt, Schein and Schutz
Clavier-Übung III. (‘The German Organ Mass’). The so-called ‘German Organ Mass’ was published towards the end of September 1739 as the third instalment of the Clavier-Übungen series. It was Bach’s first published work for organ. It was also the longest and most problematic of all the printed works that appeared during his lifetime; in many respects it was a powerful demonstration of Bach’s skill in composition produced against the background of a turbulent period of his life.
