Messenjah are a Canadian-based reggae group that flourished to become one of the most successful and popular reggae groups in the history of Canadian music. Messenjah was formed in 1980 in Kitchener, Ontario and released their first album Rock You High independently in 1982. Messenjah is a roots reggae band that was formed in 1981 in Kitchener, Ont, by Errol Blackwood (vocals, bass guitar) and Rupert 'Ojiji' Harvey (vocals, guitar, alto saxophone), the latter previously with the Toronto reggae bands Crack of Dawn and Inner Fire. Other early members were Eric Walsh (guitar), Hal Duggan (keyboards), and Raymond Ruddock (drums). Jam Session is a live album by American trumpeters Clifford Brown, Clark Terry and Canadian trumpeter Maynard Ferguson featuring tracks recorded in early 1954 and released on the EmArcy label.
Messenjah has not released an album since the late 1990s, and it is assumed the group disbanded around that time. The band was originally started by Errol Blackwood (vocals, bass guitar), who left after 1986 to start a solo career, and Rupert "Ojiji" Harvey (vocals, guitar, saxophone). After Errol Blackwood's departure Harvey became the head of the group. Messenjah's song "Jam Session" was used for many years as the intro for KCMU's long running reggae show Positive Vibrations. 1982: Rock You High (1983 re-release through WEA). 1984: Jam Session (WEA 25-04551). 1987: Cool Operator (Version VLP-001). 1990: Rock & Sway (Kick Up KUCD-001).
History Messenjah is a progressive Roots Reggae band that was founded in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada in 1981. The founding members are Rupert (Ojiji) Harvey (lead guitar and lead vocals), Errol (Skippah) Blackwood (bass guitar and lead vocals), Eric (Baby Face) Walsh (rhythm guitar and vocals) and Ray (General) Ruddock (drums). In 1984 the band returned to California to record their second album entitled Session, this time supported by a major label. The title track Jam Session received significant air time and its music video received major attention on national television. In 1985 Messenjah returned twice to their homeland, Jamaica, first to play at the World Youth Festival in Kingston, and then to play at Reggae Sunsplash in Montego Bay. Both events were very successful and the band was well received in their country of origin. Later Tony (Scraper) King joined the band to play percussions.
