An essential compilation of Manchester’s legendary Factory Records, bringing together 12 versions and album tracks aimed squarely at the dancefloor. Featuring artists from across the Factory roster including A Certain Ratio, Section 25, Minny Pops and Quando Quango. released January 1, 2011.

For other Factory artists, though, dance music became both an experiment in new sounds and their first real attempt to make records that met the needs of an audience who wanted to do more than nod with approval at the innovation on display. This is the impulse that animates the bulk of Fac. Dance, and it's why the compilation is worth hearing. Dance music can be many things, but to actually be dance music, it's got to be, you know, funky. It's telling that Fac. Dance cuts off at 1987, a year before acid house took parts of Factory's later, compulsive, electro-driven sound and remade the dance mainstream. However out-there or abrasive it gets, much of Fac. Dance is also stuff that still worked for clubbers, mostly young ones hungry for something new, in New York and Detroit as much as Manchester and London, kids who saw group revelry as the whole point of pop.

Dance series bringing together sought after 12 versions and rarities from Manchester’s revered Factory Records imprint. Despite a reputation for austere post-punk, the label’s first decade produced a slew of landmark dance records, primarily brought to the label by Rob Gretton, who valued tunes and beats over Situationist theory and laboratory experiments in popular art. Conversely, founder Tony Wilson disparaged pure dance music as lacking intellectual rigour. Dance 02 is released in conjunction with Factory Records Ltd. I've been a Joy Division and New Order fan for years, but I had never really explored much of the other music on the Factory label. Fac. Dance is a great sampler of the various artists on the infamous label. From synth-pop to post-punk to dancehall, this 2xLP is an amazing introduction to some of the lesser-known artists of Factory, many of whom only released one single. Some tracks are fantastic; others are forgettable. Regardless, it's still a great intro to some artists who have otherwise been forgotten. As for the quality of the vinyl, it's great. No real flaws or skips. Good quality for a fairly low price.
