It was her first internationally released album and it went truly global - reaching N. in the UK, US, Australia, New Zealand and six other countries in-between. It also won five Grammys and is now thought to be the 12th highest-selling album of all time with around 30m sales. And although its follow-up, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, was a perfectly decent record that sold well, it hasn't survived the test of time in the way Jagged Little Pill has. In 2005, Alanis marked Jagged Little Pill's 20th anniversary by releasing an acoustic version. But they backtracked quickly, claiming by the end of the year that it was the second-best album of the year, and its stature has only grown since - it's now widely considered to be one of the greatest British albums of all time. A legal battle with their label and intra-band squabbles resulted in a five-year delay before its follow-up, Second Coming, was released, by which time the sting had gone out of The Stone Roses. The album had its moments, but was met with a shrug by the press and fans alike, and the band split up soon after.

The Only Ones were a band that became identified with the British punk scene largely because leader Peter Perrett had a funny voice and could write a great straightforward rock & roll song at a time when such virtues were possessed almost exclusively by the faster-and-louder brigade. This helps explain why the Only Ones' self-titled debut album is regarded as a classic of the first wave of .  . Of course, when the Only Ones felt like rocking out, they did it brilliantly, and along with the instant classic "Another Girl, Another Planet," this album includes the sinister but rollicking "City of Fun" and the feedback-drenched crunch of "The Immoral Story," which points to another factor that made the Only Ones heroes in their day - their eclecticism was rooted.

That stipulated, the album is a mind-bending scorcher by any standard: a deliriously virtuosic collection of zig-zagging Zappa-esque melodies and moody emotional plunges performed by an obscure quintet temporarily channeling the authority of Weather Report. Its 18-year-old pianist-bandleader, however, didn't stick around to record a follow-up. Dennis Wilson was the only Beach Boy that actually surfed. He was also the most naturally charismatic and fun-loving, though by the mid-1970s his non-stop party lifestyle was beginning to take a heavy toll. The drummer was in his early 30s, but looked ten years older, and years of drinking and drug abuse added significant gravel to his once pristine singing voice.
