Crawlin' King Snake - John Lee Hooker & His Guitar. 5. Black Man Blues - Texas Slim. 6. Goin' Mad Blues - Delta John. 7. Who's Been Jivin' You - Texas Slim. 8. (Miss Sadie Mae) Curl My Baby's Hair. 9. Hoogie Boogie - John Lee Hooker And His Guitar. 10. Burnin' Hell - John Lee Hooker And His Guitar. 11. Weeping Willow Boogie. Beginning with Hooker's 1948 tune "Boogie Chillen" we get to hear Hooker alone with just his guitar. And along with other great performances from this early era ("Sally Mae", "Crawlin' King Snake", et. , almost the entire first disc is Hooker alone, the way many blues fans like him. From there his music expanded to include a small combo and, eventually, occasional horns and keyboards. The live disc has tracks from the 1960 Newport Folk Festival. with only a bass supporting his voice and guitar.
John Lee Hooker might well have passed on almost twenty years ago, in 2001, but his spirit and musical legacy lives on. With this huge five-album release, the scene is again set for the old bluesman to steal centre-stage. Tracks range across most of his material covering much of the legendary boogie-king’s vast back-catalogue. From his early, pared-down, near acoustic feeling takes on old, ever-popular, numbers like Catfish,to his more prominent, internationally recognised and live-stage, touring centre-pieces like Boom Boom, King of the Boogie, features a bit of just about everything the guy.

Recently, the 5 CD set King of the Boogie John Lee Hooker arrived in my mailbox. As I opened the package, I was instantly transported back to the holidays of my childhood when I opened my gifts and was so excite. ugust 22nd marked 100 years since the birth of John Lee Hooker, and there have been many events and happenings to celebrate. On that date, Craft Recordings announced the 5 CD set, King of the Boogie as part of that John Lee Hooker celebration. King of the Boogie hit streets on the 29th of September. Other interesting tracks on Disc 1 include the original of I’m In The Mood (as opposed to the later version with Bonnie Raitt from The Healer album), the infectious Huckle Up Baby, and the almost Rock ‘n Roll of 1953’s Wobbling Baby. I’m A Boogie Man has a rock ’em, sock ’em edge to it, and there’s Shake, Holler And Run, a rousing take off on Shake Rattle ‘n Roll.
