Skin Coat (live) Khanate - the quartet of Stephen O’Malley (guitar), James Plotkin (bass), Tim Wyskida (drums), and Alan Dubin (vocals) - released their second album, Things Viral, in 2003 to considerable international acclaim. This still stands as an opus of systematically deconstructed metal and crawling avant-rock tropes. Khanate have that skill for unfolding an action in such excruciating detail that you're slowly edged off your seat. But in this case there's no resolution, aside from an uptick of squealing discordance and a buzzing electronic noise that ushers out the record. Things Viral is extreme enough to appeal to people who don't have any interest in metal; the members cross metal pedigrees with ge bands- from Burning Witch and Old, to Sunn 0))), to Blind Idiot God's Tim Wyskida on drums

Things Viral is the second album by American drone metal band Khanate, released in 2003 on the Southern Lord label. The CD was released in two versions: a European digipack version and a . There was also a LP version on LOAD Records with 1000 gatefold plus 12" copies released. A video was made for the song "Dead". All Songs Written & Arranged By Khanate. Too Close Enough To Touch" – 11:11.

Khanate (pronounced Con-Eight) was born in Manhattan Autumn 2000 after an initial meeting between James Plotkin/Bass (OLD, Scorn, Atomsmasher, Death Ambient, Trifid Project, several releases on Kranky, Relapse, Rawkus and other labels under his own name and in collaboration with various other individuals) and Stephen O'Malley/Guitar (Thorr's Hammer, Burning Witch, Sunn O)))) administered a necessity to survive th. Plotkin arranged vocal torture courtesy of Alan Dubin (ex-OLD) with whom he had been working together in the proto-dirge unit Shadowcast during 2000 (along with ex-1 drummer Jason Corely). Tim Wyskida (Manbyrd, current drummer in Blind Idiot God) blessed the group with his hammers and Khanate became solidified.

While grindcore, death metal, black metal, and thrash metal are all known for their insanely fast tempos, Things Viral is the exact opposite - Khanate's Black Sabbath-influenced riffs crawl along at an amazingly slow tempo. But then, Sabbath's albums were never as consistently slow as Things Viral - and Sabbath never had a lead vocalist who sounded like AC/DC's Bon Scott. Alan Dubin, Khanate's lead singer, does have a very Scott-like voice - although what he does with it isn't very AC/DC-ish

Flawless record. Every note and every word hits you HARD. The lyrics are gold. Alan Dubin's vocals are his signature, and I can't picture better vocals to go with instrument performances that are equally as terrifying. Underrated, overlooked, and uncherished... probably how the band prefers it anyway.
