Brown Acid is brought to us by the king of stoner, fuzz rock labels, Riding Easy Records out of Hermosa Beach California. With the superb set of finds collected for Vol. 5, fans of the previous releases are sure to love this crazy ride. As amazing as the song is, the listener would NEVER know just how much legwork was involved in getting the track cleared for the album. In a phone interview, Lance Barrisi of Permanent Records (brainchild of the series) went on to explain that he had to track down former band members and label reps from Ohio to California in one hell of a witch-hunt that literally took months with many dead leads along the road.

Culled from endless hours of sifting through dusty records in forgotten corners all over the globe by the tireless crew at RidingEasy, the Brown Acid series is a Nuggets for modern times, every volume a crucial collection of impossibly obscure heavy ’n’ hairy proto-metal from the age of Aquarius. The fifth volume of anything is bound to show some wear and tear, and The Fifth Trip does have a few ho-hummers that would probably have been rejected from the first few volumes, most notably the pedestrian prog Clockwork by Cybernaut and the plodding stoner rock Mammoth and Zebra.

The Brown Acid series is curated by . label RidingEasy Records and retailer/label Permanent Records. Batting clean-up, we have Negative Space, the only LP sourced track on this album. This crunchy jam comes off the band’s 1970 record entitled Hard, Heavy, Mean, & Evil. At over six and a half minutes, The Calm After the Storm is the longest track included on this volume, but it never gets dull. Fun fact: before changing the name to Negative Space, Rob Russen called his band Snow and released the Sunflower 45 in 1969 – you might recall that groover from the First Trip.
