Born Balke formed the percussion group Batagraf in 2002, and created the concept work Siwan with singer Amina Alaoui in 2007. Jørgensen draws on the yodelling effects of northern Scandinavian joik singing, as well as mixing slithery cat-like sounds with Miles-ballad tonalities on the trumpet. probably best suited to free improv listeners, but its meticulous detailing and musicality do have an eerie seductiveness that reaches way outside that loop. The present disc – the fifth Jøkleba album, but the first for ECM – finds old friends Jørgensen, Balke and Kleive working with pulse and colour and texture in collective music-making, emphasizing electronics, trumpet and voice, in freely created pieces which hint at relationships between inspiration and instability.

Jon Balke sums up the group’s musical evolution: Siwan has been an important project for me, both because of the statement that the group in itself makes, by manifesting the spirit of coexistence across boundaries of any kind, but also because the soundscape is a palette of rich colours spanning from deep electronics to gut strings and bright vocals and cembalo, that. On the first album and on early tours, Siwan featured the vocals of Amina Alaoui, the Moroccan-born singer steeped in the Garnathi tradition of Andalusian classical music.
