Celebration Freedom Hanging Out Summer. Danilo Pérez, Claus Ogerman. Such is the case on this CD by pianist Danilo Perez with arrangements by Claus Ogerman (who previously worked on recording projects with Bill Evans and Oscar Peterson, among others). The jazz group, which includes bassist Christian McBride, drummer Lewis Nash, and percussionist Luis Quintero, plays acceptably but they clearly are having to rein in too much in deference to the strings

Complete your Danilo Perez Arranged And Conducted By Claus Ogerman collection. Some records seem to come out of nowhere. I have no idea where, where or how I got that record, but some day I found it in my collection and gave it a spin. I came to like it and play it once in a while, it's always a pleasant surprise. It's actually very well recorded (although tons of strings in the background, so it makes for loung music more than careful active listening). If one enjoys lush lounge, orchestral jazz (à la Diana Krall, etc) it's actually quite good

Ogerman arranged and conducted Diana Krall's 2001 album The Look of Love, and conducted on her DVD Live in Paris. He also served as arranger and conductor for Krall's 2009 album Quiet Nights. Ogerman won the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) for "Quiet Nights". He arranged and conducted the orchestra on George Benson's 1976 album, Breezin', as well as on two other Benson albums. In July 2008, Ogerman released an album of compositions with jazz pianist Danilo Perez, Across the Crystal Sea. Ogerman's major influences as a composer remain Max Reger and Alexander Scriabin

The Panamanian-born pianist Danilo Perez has been a force in jazz since the 1990s. He’s played with Wayne Shorter, Wynton Marsalis, Dizzy Gillespie, and others, and has released a number of albums as a leader. On this 2008 album, he teams up with the well-known composer and arranger Claus Ogerman for an incredibly lush set inspired by Bill Evans Trio with Symphony Orchestra, an Ogerman project from the 1960s. Across the Crystal Sea is an exquisite work.

If one enjoys lush lounge / orchestral jazz (à la Diana Krall, etc) it's actually quite good. The sound of that record is huge, incredibly loud, but doesn't sound clipped (I never checked, perhaps it is mixed very hot).Very good bass content, bass is deep and solid, it makes you wonder why so many digital recordings are unable to get the bass right like this one. On the bass is Christian McBride, who played on a number of good records by Ray Brown (Superbass 2) or Pat Metheny (Day Trip) or Diana Krall, etc. I don't know the other musicians, but everyone's doing a pretty good job (drums and percussion are quite good as well). The piano is jazzy, more latin style at times, but pleasant (overall the mix of piano and strings somehow reminds me of the Canadian Trail Suite by Oscar Peterson on Telarc). Cassandra Wilson sings on 2 tracks, and is -very- closely mic'd, and while I'm not a big fan of hers, both tracks are quite good. Mastering by Doug Sax, so no wonder the whole thing sounds good.Anyway a surprising record, very well recorded and quite entertaining.(I still wonder how that record wormed its way into my collection, but I'm keeping it.)
