Live! at the Star-Club in Hamburg, Germany; 1962 is a double album featuring live performances by the English rock band the Beatles, recorded in late December 1962 at the Star-Club during their final Hamburg residency. The album was released in 1977 in two different versions, comprising a total of 30 songs by the Beatles. The performances were recorded on a home tape machine using a single microphone, resulting in a low fidelity recording.
I received this album as a Christmas present shortly after it was released in 1977. At the time, I was not taken by its poor quality. After playing it through once, I played it once more recording it onto a cassette tape, and filed it away. After years of sitting in a drawer, I have once again pulled out the cassette and ran it through. I now have learned to understand what these recordings have become. This album in my collection has only been played 3 times. Among the bands recorded that evening were the Beatles, performing their last-ever stint in Hamburg, back from London fresh after making their first recordings for EMI. Coincidentally, Ringo Starr, then the drummer for Rory Storm and The Hurricanes, sat in for the infirm Pete Best on the day these sounds were captured. The band we all know, although yet unofficial, was complete that night.
Wanna Argue About the Beatles’ Last Album? ‘Abbey Road’ vs. ‘Let It Be’: Settling an age-old debate. If you’re a Beatles fan, you’ve had at least one chemically-assisted late-night argument about this (because that’s what we do). Abbey Road was the last they recorded, but Let It Be was the last they released. It’s a grey area what counts as a Beatles album and what’s merely a Beatles project. In the 1970s, fans argued over whether Hey Jude and Hollywood Bowl were official Beatles albums. Nobody argues about that anymore.
Last Night in Hamburg. I bought "The Beatles Live! at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany; 1962" as a double vinyl album back in the late 1970s. It was on some label called Lingasong. Back then, I didn't even know that any such recordings existed, so I was thrilled. The record company ended up in litigation over ownership issues of the tape and I last saw the performance split into two separate albums on another record label.
1962 Live at the Star Club in Hamburg. Lo-fi, atmospheric live recording of the pre-Ringo Beatles hurtling through their trademark Hamburg Star Club set list. Lacking in musical polish, but shot through with energy and youthful enthusiasm.
This album also has a lot of songs which The Beatles never recorded for their studio albums. This is basically the same thing as Last Night in Hamburg, except it has less songs.
