Le Negro Band was formed in Brazzaville in 1958, by Max Massengo. The elder branch of the family, they adopted folkloric rhythms on the guitar but kept a latin influence in the horns. Their clarinet and sax leads dominated the sound of the 60s. They recorded at Esengo along with Rock'a Mambo and other bands. A year later the star members of Rock'a Mambo, Essous, Malapet and Pandi, persuaded Edo, Celestin and De la Lune, the Brazzavillians in OK Jazz, to join them in a new project, Orchestre Bantou. It appears that the Negro Band was as much a house band at Esengo as Rock'a Mambo, as various singers fronted the group, as will be seen from this list. Lucie Yenga, Vicky, Brazzos and Djeskin sang with them. Tintin, Nezy et orchestre Negro Band. Naleli mama (Rumba Lingala).

Orchestre Rock-a-Mambo was an African jazz band from Brazzaville of the 1950s. It was a studio band of the Esengo music studio. The band name is a pun with the Kongolese word rocamambu "the one who looks for problems". In a Kongolese folk tale, Rocamambu is a kind of prodigal son, who runs from home and comes back rich. The band ofnen merged with the musicians from the African Jazz band and sometimes produced recordings under the title ""African Rock".
