Onyx is the fourth studio album of gothic/doom metal band, Ava Inferi. It was released on Season of Mist in 2011. The album was mixed and mastered by Dan Swanö. The onyx stone has been attributed with many meanings over the ages, states guitarist and composer Rune Eriksen. An ancient tale relates how a crooked cupid cut the fingernails of the sleeping Venus. Coming from a goddess these were transformed into the gem known on earth as onyx

With "Blood of Bacchus" AVA INFERI serve the musical equivalent to a brilliant wine. Outmost pleasing to the aural palate are the rich and sweet vocals added by Portuguese singer Carmen Simões resembling a golden Tawny Port. A far darker tint is added to the barrel by renowned composer Rune Eriksen, who has changed the course of Norwegian Black Metal with his work in legendary MAYHEM. AVA INFERI demonstrate carefully honed and exquisitely mature songwriting skills. A first tasting was offered to the audience of the Hellhounds Fest with TIAMAT and THE 69 EYES in February 2009, which was very well received by their audience.

Now "Onyx" witnesses AVA INFERI evolving into a slightly more straightforward approach. Their fourth album surprises with its groove and catchiness, while the trademark progressive elements are still lingering, but delivered in a subtle manner, which leaves more room for melodies and power. For all those interested in exquisite music not limited by boundaries of genre but rather defined by its quality and originality is the right time to discover AVA INFERI anew and delve deep into the dark beauty of "Onyx".

Ava Inferi is a gothic doom metal band from Portugal and this is their fourth studio CD. The first few songs on ‘Onyx’ are generally driven by down-tuned rhythm guitar with backing clean guitars and keys providing the melody. These songs are heavy and dense with rumbling percussion, usually melancholic and often quite ominous, featuring flowing tapestries of changing riffs just slightly warmed up by the backing melodies. Although it might not be the most original album around (that's what keeps it from being a perfect hundred) I for one am glad that Ava Inferi decided to put the "gothic" back in metal, and make an album in this style again. They did a damn good job doing it, and hopefully their follow up doesn't stray too much from this style, because really, I can't think of any current bands that play this type of style anymore, or play it this well.
