Black has now released his first CD as a bandleader, and he's pulled a bit of a fast one on the jazz crowd - the eponymous debut of his AlasNoAxis quartet skews away from being a jazz record, even an avant jazz record, much of the time.
Artist: Jim Black AlasNoAxis (Chris Speed, Hilmar Jensson, Skuli Sverrisson) Album: Antiheroes Genre: Avant-Garde, Modern Creative, Contemporary Jazz Label: Winter & Winter Released: 2013 Quality: FLAC (tracks) Tracklist: Antihero. These four individual musicians are AlasNoAxis, which is the name of this homogeneous group and "Antiheroes" is their sixth album and Jim Black's seven album as a band leader for Winter&Winter. Stefan Winter produced the recording session near Reykjavík, and Ron Saint Germain (sound engineer of Kraftwerk, Michael Jackson, Ornette Coleman and Soundgarden, to name a few) was responsible for the sound design of the mix. Jim Black about Antiheroes : My last two recordings for Winter & Winter focused on complete songs and compositions.
In live performance, . Even in ensembles led by such stellar players as Dave Douglas, Tim Berne, Ellery Eskelin, or Chris Speed, his percussive pyrotechnics are simply riveting, and one wonders whether those bandleaders have noticed the many instances when everyone's eyes are locked on the guy back there thrashing away on the skins and adding coloristic flourishes with a host of oddball paraphernalia

Jim Black/Alasnoaxis: Habyor by John Kelman, published on August 3, 2004. The whole point of Alasnoaxis is less about broader technical displays and more about direct service to the song. On these ten relatively short compositions these players manage to navigate odd time signatures and a diversity of feels and textures that lean heavily towards the kinetic. This is music that demands attention and is best played loud.
