The Anthology of American Folk Music is a six-album compilation released in 1952 by Folkways Records (catalogue FP 251, FP 252, and FP 253), comprising eighty-four American folk, blues and country music recordings that were originally issued from 1927 to 1932. Experimental film maker Harry Smith compiled the music from his personal collection of 78 rpm records. The album is famous due to its role as a touchstone for the American folk music revival in the 1950s and 1960s

I don't like the thought of this being tough or impossible for people to acquire. I even went to County Sales and the Revenant sites to check. It does seem to be gone but hopefully it'll be reprinted in coming years. The final four tracks of this album feature the brothers Bill and Hayes Shepherd from Kentucky, singing in the typical 'high-lonesome' style associated with that state. Hayes, in particular, exhibits an intense delivery similar to that of Dock Boggs on his outstanding pair of performances included here.

From the more archaic sounds of the Delta the ragtime sounds of the Piedmont, the Memphis country blues scene took the best of both worlds and shaped a sound that is uniquely Memphis. Memphis was a major stopping-off point for itinerant musicians making their way to S. ouis, Chicago, and other points in the North.
