Gerry Rafferty, released in 1974 on Transatlantic Records (TRA 270) (reissued 1978 in . on Visa Records ), is mainly a compilation of Humblebums material that Gerry Rafferty had written and performed while in that group. It comprises most of the serious musical content of the last two albums released by that group, with the exception of "So Bad Thinking" (which came from the backside of his "Can I Have My Money Back?" single).
Rafferty recorded his first solo album, Can I Have My Money Back?, with Hugh Murphy, a staff producer working for the label. Billboard praised the album as "high-grade folk-rock", describing it as Rafferty's "finest work" to date: "His tunes are rich and memorable with an undeniable charm that will definitely see him into the album and very possibly singles. Other artists continue to be inspired by Rafferty's work. In 2012, Cuillin Recordings issued Paisley Spin, a remix of three tracks from Can I Have My Money Back? by Celtic fusion artist Martyn Bennett. Bonnie Raitt recorded a reggae treatment of "Right Down the Line" for her Slipstream album released 10 April 2012

The 'Money back' material is superb, but at the time it received no push from the record label (admittedly 'small fry' Transatlantic records) or from the radio stations of the day. A shocking omission from the playlists. His mellow singing tones and wonderfully catchy yet sophisticated song writing skills are in stark evidence here, and are a portent of the glories of the later 70's and early 80's with both Stealer's Wheel and as a globe conquering solo artist. Released in '71 between stints in both The Humblebums and Stealers Wheel, Can I Have My Money Back? would herald the arrival of Rafferty as a solo artist. The whole album is full of consistently good, melodic folk influenced pop which recalls at times the music of a certain Mr McCartney amongst others.
Gerald "Gerry" Rafferty was a Scottish rock singer-songwriter known for his solo hits "Baker Street", "Right Down the Line" and "Night Owl", as well as "Stuck in the Middle with You", recorded with the band Stealers Wheel. Rafferty was born into a working-class family in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. His mother taught him both Irish and Scottish folk songs as a boy; later, he was influenced by the music of The Beatles and Bob Dylan. He joined the folk-pop group The Humblebums in 1969.
